Receding gums is a serious condition. If your gums start to recede there can be long-lasting effects including severe discomfort and extensive procedures to correct the damage. Luckily, there are some simple ways to help prevent your gums from receding. These steps can also help repair gums that have already started to recede.

Toothbrush

Make sure you are using a toothbrush with soft bristles not hard bristles. A soft toothbrush works just as effectively and is a lot safer for and gentler on your gums. The bristles should bend easily and should move smoothly over your teeth. You can purchase a soft toothbrush at any pharmacy or general store.

Brushing

Learn how to brush your teeth correctly. Contrary to popular belief, when you brush your teeth your toothbrush should not be aimed down towards your gums, it should be aimed up at an angle to your gums. This ensures that they are cleaned along with the teeth but that they are not overly irritated. Gently move your toothbrush in a circular motion. Not only does this prevent receding gums, it can also help repair them. Though it will take time, brushing with the toothbrush angled up can help push the gums back into place. In general, don’t brush your teeth too hard. Excessive pressure can lead to gum recession and can sometimes cause tooth depletion as well.

Though these tips are useful, it is always important to speak with your dentist. They can offer additional advice and help monitor the healing of your gums.
