If you are experiencing tooth pain, you are not alone in Orem, Utah. Different types and levels of severity of pain are common and can affect anyone at anytime. Here we want to address two different types of acute and severe pain and their probable causes and suggested treatments.

Acute Generalized Pain

If you feel constant, acute pain in a general area and can’t discern the exact location, you most likely have a tooth pulp issue. The inner pulp of a tooth can become inflamed and infected if decay gets too close to the tooth’s nerves or starts eating away at the pulp. It is important to see your dentist as soon as you start to feel any discomfort. Your dentist will identify the infected tooth and recommend a root canal. This procedure will remove the inflamed pulp and, if caught in time, save the tooth.

Pressure, Swelling, and Sensitivity

Sometimes an infection located in the pulp of a tooth can spread to and infect the surrounding gum tissue and bone. Occasionally, and if left unchecked, an abscess may form. You may feel pressure and notice swelling in the gums and around the infected tooth. You will feel pain if you touch the infected area. Do not underestimate these symptoms or the pain. In most cases, a root canal will be required. Make an appointment to see your dentist as soon as possible.
